Drastic Measures
The last "safe" nail theiving block, the teleport gate block, is quickly being undermined. The army just north of it is currently losing hundreds of its monsters per day.

http://larkinorguide.com/cgi-bin/islands.cgi?act=block&bid=10558

Giving them the benefit of the double, I presume the people attacking this block are merely trying to save ONE click per TA trip by attacking this block instead of the block just one step north of it. To offset this I am making the following resolution, and hope others will join me:

If I see you attacking that block, I will employ my small army of characters to send your character home. Returning to TA will cost you at least a dozen clicks, and should make you think twice about saving that ONE click per trip. I reserve the right to contine to send that character and any of your other characters home from TA until I hear from you either in chat or on the forum.

If asked, I will share the names of those people who are actively working against our efforts so that we can be more effective in ceasing the attacks on this block.

If anyone sees this as me breaking the "TA Code", I suggest we ammend said Code to include the above.

Sandy
ThankYou Sandy i have been stealing from persons when i see the army numbers drop and also have attacked a few and typed the message not to splat that square. I am glad that i am not alone in wanting to keep this square as a nail theif square.Last weekend i saw it drop 3k and i was nail theiving alot and never saw who was attacking it since it has 2 sides it can be attacked from now i check both sides b4 i resort to my efforts.Since my nail theifs are diggers and robbers also that range from lvl 30 and lower i cand usually send them home but do get my message thru usually b4 i am sent home.Thats the measures that i have been going thru trying to save this square.I shall join you on any effort to keep yhis square as a nail theif square and since the only bank on ta is in the south it makes alot of since to keep it as that for click savings.Even after the teleport gate is opened up north a person will not gain nothing if they have cashed in their nails and then teleports back south since all silvers will be lost in the teleport so the only way to do that is to not cash them in till they get to the southern area where we are trying to saye now to cash in .(just thought i would put that in there for those who didnt know )

Flossy
>if they have cashed in their nails and then teleports back south since all silvers will be lost in the teleport
i have heard that rumour that it is very costly in terms of money (and also hp's) to use the teleport gate... i guess we will find out when we get there. but as far as i know, there is not even a general store in the north, so you can't cash in your nails up there, then teleport... you'd have to teleport with a pack full of nails, then sell and bank (or market-bank) in the south, then teleport back.

i wasnt sure if a store was up there or not.i guess i just figgured there would be.

Good luck with this one Sandy.

There have been several posts begging players not to attack specific squares, for the nail thieves. But sadly I have watched square after square open and the numbers of beasties fall dramatically on the last one.

If this is how we are going to 'encourage' team work, I will post names as well.

-B
Good idea Sandy. Probably many of the people splatting there do not read the forum, so we shouldn't be nasty during the pvp.

Sorry Vader. Nothing personal. In a high-level duel, there is little chance and time to communicate. I hope you can forgive me if your intentions were not on purpose, this was only a signal. Please read the upper thread.
Solaris100 has been taught his lesson i think after 2 pvp with me and 1 with jaird he said he would go up 1 square and dark vader was sent home by Nicram we are patroling

Flossy
I will help in the effort and gaurd the square. For those who don't have nail thieves and don't think this square has any consequences for them think of this. These nail thieves help other players have money. money they use on the market to buy stuff that we leave there. They buy the stuff our diggers leave there, they buy the houseparts and high lvl items we make, their nails are used in making building stones. If nail thieving becomes difficult it will have an effect on everyone in Larki, potentially making it difficult for everyone to make money. You don't need a nail thief to see the value in this square staying put. So please, respect the request of other players to leave this square be.

Ruppert
I just realized that my second post above was my 1000th post on this forum. Ideally I would have marked the occasion with something a little more special than a post dissing another player!

Sandy
So, we have permission to attack anyone that is splatting on the square? I'm for it if we warn them the first time and invite them to chat to discuss it.
LOL MM, its permission as far as the people who posted their assent to this thread, I don't know that the 8 of us or so are in charge of TA rules!

But it is unlikely you will be hunted if that's what you mean. :)
Could we just not populate monsters on to that square?

... obviously i know I'm wrong but im asking the question to get a reson as to why not
> Could we just not populate monsters on to that square?

Because of this:

http://forum.flyordie.com/thread.jsp?forum=13&thread=35824

And this:

http://forum.flyordie.com/thread.jsp?forum=13&thread=32111

And about a half dozen other examples that I don't care to dig up.

Sandy
>Could we just not populate monsters on to that square?
that will be the next plea once the square actually does clear (which will happen eventually). but we'd rather put it off as long as possible, because like sandy pointed out, populating does happen even when people don't want it to.

Hi Guys,it has taken a while for me to find my way into the forum, but now that I have I would like to show approval for the idea of keeping the square for nails. Attacked with 3 chars, but couldn't even send a msg (dead in that much time, plus the chat in fight didn't work when I needed it to). His level is way above all mine, so I could survive one hit before being toasted... If someone could let him know that people depend on this block, and to please not attack it...

Nevermind, I caught him in chat... not sure what he'll do, but I understand his reason.
Okay! So far I thought securing this block was for a common cause! So where are the nails at 50% from the market?! I've been watching the nail market for the last week now, and it has hardly grown over 10k nails at _ANY TIME_! As for yesterday, someone has cleared the whole lot of them, but that is not the point. I thought lots of people use this block! And I thought they play along as a team with others! I am disappointed to see hardly any of these players ever put their nails on the market, since at the rate the building's going-we need less than 10k per day! And yet there is not enough still! This means that only 2-3 players probably out of the I don't know how many post their nails for that so called "overall gamer benefit"! And I am also pretty disappointed that both of my reasons for keeping clear af splatting there are shaken:
1. Needing the nails at 50% to support my construction operations, for which I pay, and in turn, I post oreputties on the market for the use of other builders.
2. Team spirit! Foolishly falling for the belief that sustaining the block is for a common good! Me being a team player in this case seems to have been a bad choice!

And yes, you can go on about prices raising on the market, etc, but you're speaking to the wrong man! I've financed my levelups with very hard cash lately, and had extra reserves for boat levelling and construction. I have a different income than nails-and it's enough for me. Also, nails going to be missing from the market? Not that I care! I need(ed) them to make my high-pers-mage easily playable asap. She would need 2-3 more levels to get real good, but she can already stand up now. I prefer building, but I don't rely on it!

So to sum up my two reasons, I'm reaching the end of my buildng plans, but I was still loyal to the will of the majority. Since I thought we all play together and respect each other.

It's time you started _working for your darn square_, not just singlehandedly benefiting from it - yet expecting others to respect your cause and even getting others(including me!) to beat home the invaders instead of you!

I appologise from those few who _do_ post their nails and at the right price too, this doesn't concern them... Or it will later on if I change my mind from my earlier approach to become one of the prime raiders of the block! And seeing how three of those players I've previously thought to aid the others with nails either didn't post them at 50% or didn't post them at all has made me realise what this block _REALLY_ is about. And if this pretty disgusting truth remains unchanged, and the nail thieves don't even _try to camouflage_ that the block is for their benefit only, then I am very close to giving up my policy not to splat at the block where it would be most comfortable for me, and become an outlaw, as many others have before me. Start posting those darn nubs at last and act like you care for that darn square and for others!
Okay, that was quite the rant. I have a few responses/reactions (call it a rant of my own):

1) I bought all the remaining nails and putty yesterday, cause I had about 12k nubs that I wanted to convert into stones. No nails and no putty is a temporary glitch due to a grossly over-skilled builder burning off thousands of clicks and nubs all at once. First come, first served. They were there for ages and ages... now that someone's bought them, suddenly someone else wants them.

2) My characters alone generate at least 10k diamond nails EVERY DAY (sometimes 15k, depending on how many of them I dedicate to that task instead of digging for oreputty). I gave up posting them on the market about a year ago cause they do not sell anywhere near fast enough. They quickly pile up in the market in absolutely massive lots, making it almost instantly impractical for characters to even find diamond nail slots on the market... buying a slot sometimes takes 50 trips to the store to sell the excess nails. In response to this, many nail theives like myself gave up even trying to list them.

3) Consider that your comments about not having nails when you need them are equivalent to me ranting about people not buying the nails when I've supplied them. I haven't done that... cause that would be silly.

4) If you think the nail theif block benefits nail theives only, you don't really understand how an economy works. Only a very small percentage of money earned in this game goes into the pockets of the NPCs (boats, traps, etc), the rest goes into the bank and market accounts of the other characters. Simply stated, more money in the economy means you sell all your market goods for higher profits.

5) I'm tired of the debate about saving this block from being cleared. Although why I call it a "debate", I have no idea... I haven't heard a single reason why it SHOULD be cleared. Does anyone know?

Sandy
I'm not saying this square should be cleared for any exact reason. Tho it's the easiest square to get to and splat on is one reason. Another reason for monstrologist's (i am not one), is that this would open up two new fresh squares for whatever it is monstrologist's do. This square also has the least amount of monsters on it and if i remember correctly the goal is to clear ALL of TA and not just certain squares for certain reasons.

Pyratic
Hmmm... none of those work for me.

Clearing on this block only saves clicks (1 per trip!) if you aren't getting sent home. Getting sent home even once costs you, what, 20-30 clicks?

There is a block that, when cleared, would create 3 new monstology blocks.

Finally, any conquest helps to clear the island. Doesn't matter if it's on a block with the most or the least current number of monsters on it.

Sandy
I suppose it won't do any good to request the nail square is left alone until north city if fully built?

But of course not... this is Larkinor where the whims of the few confound the needs of the many!

I didn't expect open reactions to be too different from what has been stated.

1. Clearly understood. Except for those nails being out there for ages.

2. That's non-building-time. Last time I needed 9k nails, all were of only 4 lots. And only 3k was left on the market.

3. True, at least the similarity drawn. However, selling nails you already have at an urgent time instead of marketing them at 50% price is a bit more easily done then getting nails at time of need at the same price.

4. You got me wrong. I was referring to those who have diggers. Regardless of prices and profit, we can make a luxurious living for ourselves without common use of the market(except for cross-char-transfers) and we don't need nails or rapid-clicking nail thieves for our living.

Oh, and you may be correct on me not fully understanding the larkinorean economy. I am a completely self-sustaining player who so far never asked for any financial or itemical support in the game up to date and never will. Even today, it wasn't a necessity, but a group's needs I addressed, to which group I belong to myself. My experience gave me enough insight to the economy, although I am not in bad need of this knowledge.

5. I am not one who can answer this question, however there has to be a dispute somewhere because all we can hear nowadays is this square. I admit I hate the dispute over the issue too. But the debate won't last much longer.
Thom, all I am asking for is a similar effort as what was shown today by Luna, Rocket, Jag, and Monty among others, thanks to whom the builders will again have construction materials to use, especially those builders who don't do thieving.

Provided the inital claim (this is the benefit of all from the block) of the defenders shines even half as bright as today, from my behalf the block could stay not just till NP is cleared, but much longer.:)
I hate to sound a little titched but what is so special about "ONE" square for picking up nails? I manage to pick up nails all over on TA and Larki.

Not that I plan to go on a splatting spree on "that" square. However I find it odd that people are arguing over a square to get nails on.

JMO.
they save a few clicks here and there because that block isnt populated yet, so there's no monster attacks. basically it's easier and takes less clicks
Nail thieves lose most of the hit points while theiving. Therefore if they get attacked by a monster, they often get sent home. Once that last safe haven is gone, nail theiving will be pretty much done.

It will take a long time after that to finish the buildings on TA.
As much as I hate the idea of losing the nail theif square I am starting to hate the current rancor even more. Its seeming self righteous to me. People are better persuaded with honey than with vinegar.

I will not perform "drastic measures" anymore.
WilliamM

Attacked him 4 times (so far) to try and send the message. Sadly, my nail theives are not all that good at fighting. Anyone else wanna take a swing?

Sandy
Well, my previous message still hasn't showed up, but I now see WilliamM is fighting at the north port. I presume one of my message about reading this thread finally got through before he sent me back home!

Sandy
Sandy - Seeing as we have a 'Dark/Magician District' now and as Jason believes the teleport gate is 240000 TA monsters East of that spot, we'd be able to move freely between the two gates and bank and thief easily. Once that other gate is cleared and built, would the 'Drastic Measures' still need to be in effect?

YoN
YoN, do you have a clue how the teleport gate will work? I sure don't. I heard that its "costly" to use it. Lets uncover it and build it, then we will know. Before that, we are just guessing.

This is just a request, but I plead with those taking down the nail theif square to just move over one to the west and work at the big tree. The extra click cost is minimal and it extends how long we keep this resource.
>> YoN, do you know how the teleport gate will work?

I don't, but guessing at the name of it it was built for TA fighters/nail theives to move freely between the Northern and Southern sides of TA before they cleared a path.

Yessss! A forest block at long last! Wonderful team effort! Thanks, guys!

Sarcasm aside, in contrast to the tone I set in the first post of this thread, I can actually see how this event is a positive for me. The sudden non-viability of nail thief characters (of which I have 11, 5 pure and 6 semis) will almost certainly lead to me spending a whole lot less time playing this game... which will likely lead to the improvement the thing I originally came here to avoid.

Sandy
This quote is going way back in this thread, but it is worth pointing out as an indicator of the veracity of the original argument.

> Could we just not populate monsters on to that square?

FYI, it took about 30 minutes from the time this block was cleared for the top monstologist in the game to post a message in the forum about which monster to populate here first, and took mere hours from that point before the first monster was populated.

Sandy
Well, finding a spokesman already on the teleport gate (probably from the atlantis pub mission), I thought it would do to release the delegate. That's a handy combination. Nail-thieving my way to accumulate gadgets and contraptions worked well. If you're a high enough level and able to take the spokesman out with the first blow it shouldn't be a problem (until more monsters get populated there, which is a certainty). So for high-level nail thieves, the square might be usable for the moment, but I'm predicting in less than a month, won't be.
Hope your other pursuits are pleasant, Sandy.
PS. get your gadgets and contraptions while they're hot! (ie. before someone decides to put more monsters on that square)
>I thought it would do to release the delegate

i notice the delegate is there already. bolderdash, would you PLEASE make sure to add this info to larkiguide when you populate monsters, as this is our only source of up-to-date monstalogy information. it takes less than a minute to open larkinorguide.com and search for the monster, click the square on the monster page where they've been populated, and confirm that you want to add that monster. and we monster mods will add it within a day. and same thing to whoever populated the spokesman, whether that be boulderdash or someone else, as i had to enter it in larkiguide myself yesterday as well.

--jason
Is it possible to release a scientist as well on that square?
Beer-Monster,
The scientist doesn't release anything on TA anymore (if you wish to check, go to the old scientist block (just south of pub/fortress) and try to find it.
The change happened when the block just south of north-port was cleared. Well, coincidentally with it, anyways.
I thought it may start to drop again on a new square but if not it is back to the Atlantis pub mission.
i'd say i'm 99% sure it won't on the new square. it is a change that happened to the whole game when a square at the north port was available for dropping monsters. before that point, only items that cannot be sold on market (whatsits, tense, silvers, etc) were dropped by monsters populated on TA. since that time, it has been the exact opposite (sellable items are now dropped, non-sellable items are not).
--jason
It has come to my attention that my cryptic comment several posts ago was probably not understood by most people. 30 x 1000 referred to the liklihood of impending inflation in the diamond nail market. This has now come to pass. Someone bought them all. Whomever accomplished this feat has my appreciation, admiration, and respect. I can think of one likely candidate, but do not know for sure who is responsible.
i wouldn't worry about diamond nails on the market... if nail thieving slows down, there are always robbers around larki picking up nails in houses.
