I had 64 points and played a 56 point person. We only played 1 end. I took the end by 1 point. When I went back to the room, my points were down to 56 and his were up. Why??

It sounds like your game was slated for more than one end (2,4,6,etc.)and you left before the determined amount of ends were complete, giving your opponent the win.
I found out what I did wrong. I had last rock and was counting one point. I didn't want to throw my last rock and do any damage. So I assumed I had one the end and left. I got a penalty for leaving before the end was finished.
